India has won four of the fourteen Test matches played at the MCG, including back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2020. With two Tests left, the current Test series is locked at 1-1.
To put it briefly..
*On December 26, the Boxing Day Test will begin.
*At the storied MCG, India has won four Test matches.
*In Melbourne, India is aiming for their third consecutive victory.
With the Border Gavaskar Trophy in the second half, the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is predicted to be an exciting contest. Pat Cummins’ Australia responded with a 10-wicket victory in the pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval after Jasprit Bumrah led India to a commanding 295-run victory in the Perth Test.
Rohit Sharma, who has lost four of his last five Test matches, is under pressure. Rohit has had a lot of problems since the Test series against Bangladesh because he hasn’t played well at bat either. Despite failing to win the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, Australia, on the other hand, has momentum on their side.

Given that the series is tied at one, India’s fate in the series may ultimately be determined by the Melbourne Test. Needless to say, India’s series campaign may come to an end if Rohit fails to get back to his previous level of play as captain. In the current five-match Test series, India’s performance in the Boxing Day Test could make or break their chances.
Melbourne: The happy hunting ground of India
India particularly enjoys playing Test cricket at the MCG. Four of the ten Test matches that India has won on Australian soil have taken place at the storied Melbourne stadium. Sunil Gavaskar and company won by 59 runs in 1981 after India, led by Bishan Singh Bedi, won by 222 runs in 1977. Actually, India had won consecutive Tests, demonstrating their superiority in Melbourne.
In 2018, following Jasprit Bumrah’s six-wicket haul in the opening innings, Virat Kohli’s India crushed Tim Paine’s team by 137 runs. India won the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets in 2020 thanks to Ajinkya Rahane’s 112.
Even though they have lost eight Test matches there, MCG has long been India’s happy hunting ground. Given that India has a dismal Test record in Sydney, the forthcoming game is even more significant. India has only triumphed once in 13 Test matches played at the SCG, and that victory occurred in 1978.
This is India’s test record in Australia by venue.

At the MCG, India is the second-most successful visiting team. The other teams that have won Test matches in Melbourne are South Africa (3), the West Indies (3), and Pakistan (2).
The only Test-playing countries to have played at the MCG without winning are Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

India searches for a hat-trick among several hat-tricks.
India had never won a Test series on Australian soil before the 2018–19 series. However, since that tour, they have largely defeated the Australians in their own country. Following the valiant efforts of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, India also broke through the Gabba fortress in the 2020–21 series. Right now, India is aiming for a hat-trick of series victories in Australia.
India is looking for their third consecutive victory in Melbourne after winning their Test matches there in 2018 and 2020. Australia will be working hard to avoid repeating their mistakes from the previous two times, so the task won’t be easy.
